FAQs

"Are all of your products vegan and cruelty free?"

Yes! Everything we make is 100% vegan and we are strongly against animal testing, so we ensure that even our suppliers and their suppliers do not test. We are Leaping Bunny and PETA Certified and in the process of being added to the Logical Harmony list of vegan and cf brands. The candy in our packages is also always vegan!

"How do I know if I'll like a fragrance?"

We understand that fragrances are one of the toughest things to buy online. Because of this, we offer affordable 2ml samples of all of our seasonably available scents. If you have any questions, feel free to chat with us via the pop-up in the lower left of the screen, or email us at southerncomfortsfragrance@gmail.com.

"What's this seasonal fragrance business?"

As of September 1st, 2017 all of our fragrances in all products are seasonal. At the end of this FAQ you can find a list of which fragrances are available by season.

"What are the longevity and throw ratings?"

All fragrances as of September 1st will have these. Longevity is how long a fragrance lasts after applying on average (but all skin chemistry is different, so your milage may vary, of course), and throw is how well other people will be able to smell it once applied. An easy way to think of them is that longevity is time, and throw is like sound volume.

Low longevity simply means that layering products in that scent and/or reapplication will be helpful, or that you can switch scents throughout the day like Tom Ford (he's fancy)! While we try to maintain the highest longevity possible, some scents (delicate florals and citrus notes in particular) aren't long lasting by their very nature.

Low throw is perfect for workplaces and other environments with scent-sensitive people in them. These may be strong scents, but they sit close to the skin, so only you and people in your immediate bubble can smell them. Layering can increase throw as well! We feel that offering scents with a variety of throw levels is important, because we understand that different environments call for different "noise levels" in fragrance.

"Do you do local sales in Bloomington?"

All sales are typically online, but we deliver within the city of Bloomington! Use coupon code BTONDVRY to waive shipping costs and get delivery within 3 miles of Bloomington.

"Do you give out free samples with orders?"

Here at SoCo, we are of the Chaotic Good alignment, so packages come with random good things. Candy (vegan of course), occasionally free samples or coupon codes, and sometimes even toys! Because samples are both costly and time consuming, we do not give them out for free very often, but you will definitely always get a little extra fun in your package!

"When will I get my order?"

That depends! Our current turnaround time is updated daily on the home page, and at the very bottom of every other page. The time listed is business days, so weekends and holidays don't count (even though we do almost always work to fill orders on those days, as well).

"Why is the turnaround time so long?"

We are a tiny home business, and many of our items are made to order. I'm also a full-time PhD student and professor, and I pole dance at a local studio 8-10 hours a week! We rely heavily on friends to help pack up orders every weekend. Because of this, our TAT (turnaround time, or time from your order being placed to it going to the post office) fluctuates between 7 and 30 business days, depending on various circumstances. We update the TAT on the front page of the shop daily to maintain accuracy, and we always strive to get orders out as quickly as we possibly can.

Merchandise such as apparel and home goods are shipped by a third party and may arrive sooner, or later, than the rest of your order.

"Can you explain the reward system?"

Sure! When you create an account, you get 200 points. After that, every $1 you spend gets you 10 points, and every time you refer a friend who makes a purchase you get 500 points. For every 500 points, you get $5 off a future order!!

"Do you partner with bloggers, exchanging products for reviews?"

We have a social media team, and we occasionally accept applications. We announce via Instagram and FB when we are accepting new members for the team. On occasion, we will do a one-time partnership with a blogger who has over 6k followers on social media. We also offer a blogger discount in many cases, so feel free to chat with us via the pop-up in the lower left of the screen, or email us at southerncomfortsfragrance@gmail.com. Please include links to your blog and/or social media, and information about your blog's organic reach, etc. Thanks!

"Do you use stock scents?"

Nope! Every SoCo Fragrance is hand-blended with the highest quality individual notes available. We use essential oils, absolutes, accords, resins, melanges, extracts, and other natural and synthetic fragrance notes. We have hundreds of fragrance notes, and each is held to the highest possible standard. If it smells like a candle, it belongs in a candle, not on your skin.

"I want a custom fragrance, but I don't know where to start"

Feel free to chat with us via the pop-up in the lower left of the screen, or email us at southerncomfortsfragrance@gmail.com! If you have an idea, we are happy to brainstorm with you. To make the process run smoothly, it would be best if you have a list of notes in mind. For example, here is a message from a previous customer that was incredibly helpful:

"Hi there! I am interested in having you create a custom perfume for me. I would like it to smell like a cafe in Paris that I loved. Coffee, spices like cinnamon and cardamom, rain on bushes and stone streets, and fresh flowers like roses and carnations."

Please keep in mind that indie perfumes are inherently different than mainstream perfumes that you find at Sephora or Ulta, in that they are typically fewer notes and more atmospheric. We aren't able to dupe your favorite Armani fragrance, but we would love to make you a signature scent that reminds you of your grandma's kitchen or your favorite vacation destination.

"I thought SoCo was an Etsy shop"

We started on Etsy, and our reviews are still up for y'all to peruse! Over at our flagship shop (www.etsy.com/shop/socofragrance) you can see that we've sold over two thousand items in the time we've been open, and received many hundreds of five star reviews. We are just expanding to various other platforms, including putting our products into several brick and mortar stores soon!

"Do you accept returns?"

We do not. However, if an item arrives damaged, we will give a full or partial discount, or replace it. We are not responsible for lost or stolen packages, nor are we responsible for customs.

"What's up with those crazy looking cats on your FB and IG?"

Moonpie and Uy are our junior perfumers! Uy no longer lives or works with us, but he is happy and healthy living with my ex partner here in Indiana. They are both Persians who we rescued through Helping Persian Cats in Los Angeles. Everyone in the area should check out one of their adoption events!

"OMG, now you have a bunch of dogs, too?"

Nobody actually asks these questions, but we think FAQs should be fun. The SoCo household has one full-time canine pal, Sadie, who was rescued after being in the Bloomington animal shelter for over 60 days with no interest in her. We lucked out, though, because she's the biggest love bug EVER! There are also some pups who hang around a lot these days named Foxy Lady and Frederick Doglass. They are also rescues, of course.

Adopt, don't shop. Seriously.

"Do you love tacos?"

Yes. Particularly black bean and sweet potato soft tacos, if you wanted to make us dinner. I'm a pretty avid cook, and teach the geography of food, so I'm always up to eat something yummy and vegan that's cooked by anyone but me!

"I have other questions though!"

Shoot us an email or chat with us via FB or IG! We love getting to know our customers! Moonpie especially loves meeting new friends, so don't ever hesitate to say hi!

"Please explain the seasonal fragrances!"

Fall 2017: September 1st - November 17th

The Bearded Lady: (Notes: leather, warm amber, blood orange liqueur, spiced cider, dry hay) She’s sexy and tough at the same, and says eff your beauty standards. The bearded lady wears leather and lace, drinks hot apple cider with a hefty shot of orange liqueur in it, and reads romance novels in haystacks when she can get away from the carnival.

The Conjoined Twins: (Notes: ozone, dirt, petrichor, vetiver, oppoponax, oakmoss, lychee, peach, hydrangea, dahlia) They will never see eye to eye. One loves long walks in stormy cemeteries, and the other likes fresh fruit and flowers. The Conjoined Twins may be opposites, but together they are strange and beautiful.

The Tattooed Woman: (Notes: Mexican vanilla, lily, Asian pear, pink peppercorn, cardamom, sweet smoke) Stunning and mysterious, she’s definitely an attention grabber. The Tattooed Woman’s tent smells like dark vanilla, rich florals, exotic fruit and spices, and trails of incense smoke.

The Tunnel of Love: (Notes: Dark water, wet wood, caramel corn, strawberry lip gloss, motor oil) Take a ride with your best gal through the winding waters. The Tunnel of Love is a nostalgic journey in a wooden heart shaped boat through dark water, with fresh caramel corn to snack on between strawberry flavored kisses.

The Fortune Teller: (Notes: Dark chocolate oranges, espresso, nag champa, carnation, dark musk) She can see your past and your future in her crystal ball- ask her if you dare. The Fortune Teller’s tent is thick with incense smoke, steam from her espresso, and the lingering scent of carnations and chocolate oranges brought to her by admirers and those who seek to find out what secrets she may know.

West Memphis Sweater Weather (gourmand): white chocolate, coffee, whipped cream, toasted bread, french vanilla, wood, amber

Fog rolling in over a Smoky Mountain cabin calls for a lazy morning with a sweet, creamy white chocolate mocha and your favorite fuzzy sweater.

Kentucky Harvest: fall leaves, red apple, pear, cedar wood, dirt
Nothing says fall like a stroll through the orchard, letting the scents of the trees and cold earth envelop you, while ripe apples and pears fulfill promises of sweetness to come.

Cuthulu in Carolina: Seawater, wet sand, ancient books.
Heed the call and unleash the Deep Ones, y’all. A dark and all-powerful fragrance. We've been told it smells like an old library!

Fall '17 exclusives-

St. Louis Cemetery: Notes: Carnations, morning mist, tilled earth, mown grass, roses, headstones. Take a stroll through the cemetery at dawn. Fresh dug graves and ancient headstones intermingling in the the fog, and the scent of day old roses and carnations swirling around your feet.

Tuscaloosa Trick or Treat:  Notes: Dark chocolate, hazelnuts, burning leaves, dirt, leather, sweet tobacco. Tuscaloosa 1.0 was one of our first Halloween scents, and it was good, but not perfect. This new version is PERFECT. It's chocolatey but dark and spooky and a little rough around the edges. Like a mysterious old house that everyone knows gives out the best chocolate, if you're brave enough to ring the doorbell.

Haunted Hayride: Notes: Spiced apple cider, dry hay, bonfires, dust, caramel corn. Bundle up and head on a spooky and fun haunted hayride! Sip hot spiced cider and munch on gooey caramel corn while ghosts and zombies jump out and terrify you. In the distance, bonfires burn and their smoke carries on the chilly breeze.

Pumpkin Brunch: Pumpkin french toast, spiced apples, caramel sauce, pumpkin spice chai. Fall is in the air, and what says fall more than pumpkins and apples? Creamy and sweet pumpkin French toast, cinnamon clove spiced apples, rich caramel sauce, and even more pumpkin mixed with spicy sweet chai tea!

Winter 2017/2018: November 17th - March 2nd

Woman Enough To Take My Man: Honey, honeycomb, almond, brown sugar, white tea, ginger. The sensual scent of honey intertwines with the richness of almond and hazlenut, kissed with the lingering scent of brown sugar and a touch of spicy ginger. Super bold, a little sweet, and little naughty, just like Loretta Lynn herself!
Woman Enough is a morpher! It goes from a very sweet almond, to a lightly spicy honey, to a complete honey bomb. It's a sexy adventure!

Grandma Odene’s House: almond, pound cake, milky coffee, peach preserves. Evoke the nostalgia and comfort of home with this unique blend.  It is the next best thing to sharing old photos and fond memories over creamy coffee and a plate of homemade pound cake topped with grandma’s peach preserves.

Happy Challah-days: fresh baked bread, wildflower honey, poppyseeds, butter, tonka bean, amber. There’s nothing quite like fresh baked Challah bread slathered in soft honey butter to warm up a cold day. This scent evokes both the delicious snack and the comforting scent of grandma's oriental perfume, which lingers throughout her entire house.

The Lady is a Tramp:: dark Mexican vanilla, barrel aged bourbon, tonka bean absolute, warm amber, sweet pipe tobacco, mahogany, and gardenia. The Lady is a Tramp is a sexy, sultry, slightly rugged vanilla scent with a trace of flirty, feminine gardenia. It smells like a mysterious woman just walked by a group of handsome men in an upscale lounge.

Abuela's Holiday Kitchen: Dark chocolate, cinnamon, chili powder, black coffee, bread, brown sugar, amber, black musk. Abuela's kitchen on Christmas eve always smells like spicy Mexican hot chocolate for the kids, steamy black coffee for the grownups, and rosca de reyes, a traditional holiday sweet bread. This fragrance is sure to keep you smelling warm and sweet, with a nice little spicy kick!

Winter Mint Dreams: Peppermint, snow, sugar, cedar, winter ozone. The sweet scent of puffy peppermint candy with wisps of cold winter air and frosty snow. This one is definitely a peppermint candy scent, but it's not a true gourmand. The atmospheric outdoorsy winter notes balance it and prevent it from being too sweet. A definite unique addition to anyone's peppermint fragrance collection!

Captain Flint: Cigar shop, paper, oakmoss, sea salt, rum. Take the wheel with this bold and stately blend of sweet tobacco, rich oakmoss, old maps, and sea spray.

Three Fundamental Truths: Lime, cream, blackberry, bourbon. In which Angelica Schuyler admits that she too is in love with Hamilton, but can’t marry a poor soldier and so introduces him to her sister Eliza, sealing her own fate to never be satisfied. The bitter lime scent of loss drowned in blackberries, cream, and bourbon cocktails.

Spring 2018: March 2nd - June 1st

Candy Cove: Sweet ocean breezes, blue and pink cotton candy, vanilla saltwater taffy, and juicy red candy apples. Imagine walking down the boardwalk on a warm, sunny day, smelling the sweet scents coming from your favorite candy shoppe... that's where Candy Cove will take you! This scent is primarily delicious candy notes, but the sweetness is perfectly balanced by the realistic aquatics. Perfect for candy lovers who want something wearable and adult, but still sugary and delicious!

Driftwood:  Dark ocean breezes, mahogany, cedar, and a touch of pine. What would a sexy, sexy merman smell like? Probably this atmospheric unisex-to-rugged blend of dark ocean waters and sun-dried wood! This scent is atmospheric and aquatic, but grounded perfectly with the rich wood notes. So much more than the sum of its parts, this scent is rich, dimensional, and very sexy. Perfect for mermen or any merperson who loves a more woodsy, deep fragrance.

Aunt Bessie's Bunnies: creamy violet candy, pound cake batter, geranium, marshmallow fluff. A joyful, sunny and innocent blend of flowers and treats creates a vibrant and sugary scent that feels like a barefoot frolic through the daisies.

Darlin’: peach candy, sunscreen, violet, wild rose, day lilly, vanilla. A sweet and sassy combination; sweet peach candy and sunscreen paired perfectly with creamy floral notes. As close as you can get to youth in a bottle!

Baby Cakes: orange blossom accord, buttercream icing, vanilla cake, bergamot, birthday candles. Grandma used to make vanilla layer cake with orange blossom icing for all of my birthdays in Charleston. She always served it with Earl Grey tea. I created this fragrance as a birthday gift to myself this year, to remind me of her.

I Fall To Pieces: Peony, rose, British coriander leaf, black currant, white musk. The delicate scent of peonies intertwines with the romantic aroma of fresh cut roses combined with a hint of spice from British coriander, a dash of crisp juicy black currants and finally easing softly into a sultry light white musk which will have you falling to pieces like the ballad from Pasty Cline.

Gardens You Will Never See: Fresh mown green grass, ivy, light but hyper-realistic rose, a touch of peony, morning glory, and hydrangea bushes. In which Hamilton looks back upon his legacy as he lays dying after a fatal duel with none other than Aaron Burr. The scent of the victorian gardens surrounding the Washington Monument; the legacy Hamilton will never live to see.

You’ll Be Back: Tea, sea spray, mahogany, a touch of powder. In which King George reminds the colonists that he is still their leader, and attempts to quell the stirrings of rebellion. The scent of chests of tea hurled into the ocean at night.
